Wear It Purple Day – August 29, 2025

Wear It Purple Day (WIPD) unites LGBTQIA+ youth and allies across schools, community groups, universities, and workplaces to promote inclusivity and support for rainbow young people. This day highlights the importance of creating safe, respectful, and empowering environments for all students and staff, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, or religion.

Key Facts:

  • Up to 11% of Australians have diverse sexual orientations or gender identities.

  • Many LGBTIQ+ students face negative language and bullying.

  • Trans and gender diverse youth experience significantly higher rates of mental health challenges.

  • Peer rejection and bullying are common among trans youth.

How to Support LGBTQIA+ Youth:

  • Listen without judgment and respect their names and pronouns.

  • Check in regularly and support their journey.

  • Educate yourself on LGBTQIA+ history and issues.

  • Speak up against discrimination.

Cultural Context:
Many cultures, including Pasifika, First Nations, South Asian, and Southern Italian communities, have long recognized diverse gender identities with respect and unique roles.
