Guidance officers

Guidance Officers are teachers with specialist training and qualifications in career development, counselling and psycho-educational assessment.

The Guidance Officers’ role is to assist students to achieve the greatest benefit from their time at school. They help identify factors that can be barriers to learning and development, and assist in planning interventions and programs that are designed to help students achieve positive outcomes.

This involves working closely with students and their parents/caregivers, often in conjunction with teachers, specialist support personnel and other community agencies.

The Guidance Officer assists students with issues that cover three main areas.

Career issues

  • subject selection 
  • post school course selection (TAFE, QTAC, other Training providers) 
  • career planning and decision making (SETP) 
  • career information (including School Based Traineeships & Apprenticeships) 

Educational issues

  • Assess students’ developmental levels and abilities 
  • Assist in developing educational adjustments 
  • Assess students’ placement and specialist support needs 
  • Assist students’ adjustment to a new setting 
  • Study/Homework/Goal Setting 

Personal issues

  • Provide personal counselling in areas of relationships, individual safety and crisis management
  • Support students’ manage behavioural difficulties
  • Welfare Issues
  • Accommodation 
  • Financial difficulties 
  • Appointments and Referrals

Parents and/or students can self-refer. Contact the Guidance Officer or School Office on (07) 3897 1111 for an appointment.

Students may also be referred by school staff.
